Oh so rare- suitable for the most advanced collection! This is the "kingpin" of the Hotel Utica tableware.
We offer an extremely rare circa 1912 Reed & Barton silverplate wine / champagne bucket with the pronounced Hotel Utica Indian logo. The logo features a Native American Mohawk type Indian Chief standing beside some teepee’s and in the foreground are Mountains and a Valley. Under the logo of the Chief it reads “ U-NUN-DA-DA-GES” – “HOTEL UTICA”. The logo is prominent and measures 1 3/4" by 1 1/2". Heavy weight, quality and wonderful form. 8 1/2" tall, 11" wide. Anything from this hotel is considered rare, but actual silver plate hollowware is something that's hard to find. We have not heard of nor seen this piece. We live near Utica and have been lucky enough to have handled much Hotel Utica artifacts- this piece we've never encountered. We believe that this piece was from the original order of silver plate for the hotel’s 1912 grand opening. Historically, construction on the hotel started in 1911 with its completion and grand opening on March 11th, 1912. It was an impressive 10-story 200-room hotel of fireproof construction, including four dining rooms, a ballroom, an assembly hall, a restaurant for ladies, and a grill and cafe for gentlemen guests. It was located downtown Utica at the intersection of Lafayette and Seneca. The hotel also commissioned N.C. Wyeth to paint four life-sized murals about the hotel in 1911 for the March 11th, 1912 opening of the hotel. This was his earliest commission for murals. Wyeth also completed murals at the Hotel Traymore in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Wyeth was a very famous “realist” American artist and illustrator. After it opened, the Utica became locally famous in the area and was advertised as Utica’s leading hotel. In 1926, the hotel added the four top floors added the hotel’s guest capacity to 250. The hotel also advertised as being the “Gateway to Adirondacks and the 1000 Island – In the Heart of the Mohawk Valley – Midway Between Niagara Falls and New York”. Some of the hotel’s most notable guest included President William H. Taft (in 1912), President Franklin D. Roosevelt (in the 1920’s), Amelia Earnhart in 1928, and even Judy Garland in the 1950’s. On November 10th, 1972, the hotel’s business had declined to the point that the hotel ceased operations and closed. As time went on, the hotel’s building was used for other housing purposes, but eventually became abandoned and vandalized. However by 2001, the hotel was restored and today the hotel has been returned to its original grandeur. As stated earlier, the hotel also had some of the finest and most well known artwork commissioned for inside the hotel by the famous artist N.C. Wyeth. In addition to the murals in the hotel, the artwork was recreated for the hotel’s china service plates. One of the most famous was the work known as “The Return of the Hunter”. The image on the side of this coffee pot also features a Native American Mohawk type Indian Chief standing beside some teepee’s and in the foreground are Mountains and a Valley. Under the logo of the Chief it reads “ U-NUN-DA-DA-GES” – “HOTEL UTICA”.
