E. Howard & Company of Boston No. 69 Eight Day Marine and Locomotive Clock 4 1/2 dial, Nickel Plated Case, 6 1/2"diameter These clocks were designed to fill a want long felt for clocks for locomotives, steamships, yachts, etc. In fact, for all places where a pendulum clock cannot be used on account of the vibration, and yet quite accurate time is required. The workmanship in these clocks is equal to that in a chronometer balance, and is full jeweled in the escapement, and can be fully adjusted if required. E. Howard & Co. was famous for high grade regulators, watches, and marine clocks. Examination of E. Howard marine clocks identifies them as perhaps the finest marine clocks ever made in America. One of the most famous marine clocks made by Howard was referred to as the model #69. It appears from study of various Howard catalogs that at least two different movement designs were given this model number by E. Howard & Co. The earliest model assigned #69 was a very large round highly polished brass time only movement, with winding arbor at the two o'clock position, displaying exceptional quality. Very rare, this movement will be referred to here as the old style model #69. Later catalogs also show a new style model #69, but design of this movement is a vastly different rectangular nickel plated movement wound at the 6 o'clock position. No expense was spared in the construction of the model #69 and low production allowed this type of manufacture. This is the new style No. 69, circa 1903. They were made in 5 different sizes, this being the smallest. This clock does run, it was cleaned and lubricated a few years back. It is in very good cosmetic condition as well. There are no flaws to be found on the dial and the nickel finish shows little to no wear. We do not have the original key or keys. It looks like there is one for the latch and one to wind and regulate. We will include a winding key with it.
