This Howard Pierce Pair of Raccoons comes from a significant Howard Pierce collection that has been cabinet kept for many years. The pair exhibits Howard Pierce's incredible talent of artistically interpreting animals in his ceramic art, while capturing their essence and giving them such character and charm. The rich hues of deep brown stripes on their tails give the pieces such artistry and life-like qualities. The raccoons are difficult to find as a pair. Howard Pierce was a highly talented artist and a one-man studio potter who started his work in the 1940's and continued up until his death in 1994. He is recognized as one of the greats having worked with William Manker, and his work strongly influenced California Pottery. His work has always been highly collected and has become more so over the last few years, particularly as pottery experts and collectors discover the depth and quality of his talent, work, and contributions to the arts. The sitting raccoon is approximately 6" long and the standing raccoon is about 5" high. One of the pair is marked Howard Pierce. T are no chips, cracks, or damage. A fine addition to any studio pottery, mid-century modern, Eames era, or California Pottery collection. Offered at a reasonable reserve for the collector.
