Up for bid is a large, old, original, unsigned piece of American art pottery by Weller in the Ivory (Clinton-Ivory) pattern. As noted, it is unmarked but is shown on page 125 of the 1987 book, "The Collector's Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery" by Sharon and Bob Huxford. It is a jardiniere in matte glaze featuring a simple, yet elegant creamy color both inside and out which sets the stage for its raised, nature-inspired decoration of 2 squirrels nestled in and among trees, leaves, and acorns. It standws a full 9.5 inches and its opening has a diameter of 10.5 inches. The bottom base diameter is 6 inches. The condition is good with several things of note. First, there is crazing on both the base and throughout the inside. There is crazing that is beginning to show on the outside surface at the bottom of the piece. There are several hairlines on the bottom of the piece that show both on the outside and the inside. And there are 2 hairlines that begin on the rim of the opening and extend vertically downward approximately 3 inches. All hairlines, while clearly visible on inspection, are tight. On the outside rim, there is a very small break in the glaze but not what I would call a chip. And finally, the shading of the brown is uneven - purposeful, I don't know.
