Believe this MECHANICAL CRANK - ROTARY magic lantern glass slide in WOOD MOUNTED FRAME (see photos) dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's? Research on net indicates that this mechanical slide was called THE MOUSE EATING MAN and/or THE RAT CATCHER. When crank is turned a mouse/rat slowly crawls up the sleeping man's stomach and eventually finds it was into the man's mouth! Apparently this slide was a BIG HIT with theater audiences at the turn of the century causing a wide variety of responses from members of the audience! Although the COLORFUL and DETAILED art work on slide suggests that slide may be of European origin I can find no indication of maker and/or origin on slide. Perhaps a serious collector could help to identify this fine mechanical slide? Wood frame measure approximately 6 15/16" x 4 1/2" while circular glass image/plate measures approximately 3 1/4" in diameter. Slide is in Very Good++ Condition. Easily rates a 9 perhaps even higher! No fading of colors! No peeling of paint. No cracks or broken glass. No splits to wood frame. No missing cogs in gear! Crank rotates easily! Faults? Can find none! Mechanical magic lantern slides are HIGHLY COLLECTABLE and /this outstanding slide with its macabre and humorous animation will make a FINE ADDITION any vintage magic lantern slide collection or display.
