RARE LARGE SIZE 7" BY 11" HUBLEY CAST IRON BLACK COCKER SPANIEL SPRINGER SPANIEL DOG DOOR STOP DOORSTOP BANK, MARKED #487 , in NEAR MINT CONDITION with ORIGINAL PAINT!! This is the LARGEST Cocker Spaniel that Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, PA, produced in the 1930's. It is pictured in their catalog as item #487 and sold for a whopping $12.00 at the time, more than most of their other doorstops (their bulldog sold for $7.20, see my other auction)! It measures a full 7" tall and 11" long and weighs around 7 pounds! These large vintage dogs are very scarce and hard to find in good condition. This one is nearly mint, with 99% of its thick black enamel paint, and signature red Hubley collar. You have to have it in bright sunlight to even see the paint loss, since the undercoating is also black. Indoors, it looks absolutely mint and lustrous black! It has a thin coin slot on top. It is held together by two flathead screws that remove to reveal the Hubley's catalog #487 impressed in the cast iron on the inside on both halves! It is quite rare to find a Hubley Cocker Spaniel Bank in this size. Most were in the smaller 4" by 6" size, and even these are not easy to find in good and original condition. The presence of the coin slot, added to the fact that the screw heads were not puttied and painted over, but left clean and removable, shows that Hubley intended that this large dog be used as a bank or a doorstop. I have never seen another Large Hubley Cocker Spaniel Doorstop that was factory prepared to be a bank! The seams fit together very tightly, even though it can be taken apart. This is a beautiful antique dog in the kind of condition you only run across once in a blue moon. And you can be sure of its authenticity. Would make a great gift!
