Otto Sommer (American, mid 19th c.--Hudson River School), oil on canvas. Otto Sommer immigrated to America from Munich in the mid-1800s. He carried with him his fascination with the Bavarian Alps. This led him to New York State where dramatic mountain vistas abound. Influenced by Albert Bierstadt, Sommer is associated with the style called the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School was a mid-19th century American art movement by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. Their paintings depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, as well as the Catskill Mountains, Adirondack Mountains, and White Mountains of New Hampshire. Otto Sommer was a prominent artist in this movement. His works are on display at several locations, including Washington D.C. and Newark, NJ.
