Bowknot Ironstone PlatterThis platter was made by the J.& G. Meakin Pottery company when it was in its infancy--the early 1850's. It has wonderful size at 18 and 1/2 inches long by 13 and 1/4 inches wide. The simple, slightly raised bowknots are unusual and appealing. They were not easy to photograph but t are six of them around the perimeter and they are each two and one half inches long. The only mark is an impressed oval: J & G Meakin/ Pearl China. This is their earliest mark. In excellent condition, t are no chips or cracks. A couple tiny impurities or bubble pops which have discolored are noted on the edges and on the face of the platter along with one pin-prick size bubble pop which has absorbed a tiny stain less than 1/8 inch in diameter. This is shown in the fourth picture. Another much lighter discoloration is also on the front of the platter, and is about 3/8 inch in diameter. Guaranteed old and original.
