Description: One of the most impressive platters I have seen in Romantic Transferware both due to its size as well as the complexity and richness of its decoration, the oval serving piece offered in this auction is a product of the late 1840s or 1850s and was almost certainly made in one of the good potteries of the Staffordshire area. It is unmarked so more specific attribution is difficult yet style, quality and shape all support this hypothesis. If anyone out t has anything to contribute, I would definitely welcome your insights!Measuring an impressive 18 3/4" long and slightly shy of 14 1/2" wide, the platter's oval body is made of ironstone and is quite hefty. Its transfer decoration is truly breathtaking as it combines "Oriental" and "Classical" elements to create an imaginary landscape - a "dreamscape" I should call it! - that relaxes the busy "Westerner's" psyche while it creates the illusion of far away travel and challenging adventures!Covering the platter's well, the cental scene depicts a palace on the waterfront with balconies overlooking the river, onion domes, terraces filled with luscious greenery shaded by tall palm trees. Tall mountain peaks and the skyline of a city in the distance provide the backdrop for multi-arched bridges and classical ruins scattered among flowering grasses in the foreground.
