Character of Firkin: Large bottom of stack 1870*s firkin in turn of century sea blue paint. It measures a whopping 12" lid diameter x 12.5" bottom diameter x 12" tall x 16.5" tall with handle up! It's all original having no alterations. ( See photos). Finger lapped bands on lid are held securely by original copper nails with a dry surface as is the wood. A couple of the bands can be moved with your finger due to the natural shrinkage of wood across the grain over the decades. This can be remedied by a water bath soak or just wait for humid days to return if you live in the north woods as I do and the bands will tighten up beautifully! Pictures have been taken to show the age appropriate wear of the firkin. There have been no alterations to this firkin and all pictures were taken in natural light to show the true colors of the piece. Traces of the original paint are still on the top of the lid and most is still in tact around it's band-the paint on the lid band has oxidized nicely. The base of the firkin, in my opinion, was probably repainted at the turn of the century making it at least 100 yrs old and is dry as well. It has no odors and comes from a smoke free environment. It's a very desirable bucket for the antique purist and would even make a nice side table to a chair! (see photo)Very versatile decorative item and a wonderful read more
