I have for auction an extremely large antique charger measuring 390mm across and made by Zsolnay Pecs of Hungary. The impressed form number '3775' on the base dates it to between 1891 to 1895. No photograph can do this item justice- the pierced floral design bears a myriad of colours- pink, yellow, blue, green, mauve and the stems of the flowers are richly gilded and the whole thing is covered in a subtle lustrous glaze. The design itself is somewhat away from the norm- at first I couldn't put my finger on it but then I realised that the view of the flowers is from the underside- as if you were holding a glass bowl of flowers above your head and looking up. Nearly all floral designs show a view from above or the side. It is comprehensively marked on the base with the factory mark impressed and printed, the form number '3775' and '2', '15' and '36' impressed. 'Made in Hungary' is included in the underglazed blue factory mark. It is in incredible condition, probably due to the fact that a plastic covered wire has been passed through it so it could be hung on a wall and therefore not had to withstand the rigours of being moved about or having items placed upon it.
