For sale is a very large basket attributed to the J B Cole Pottery of Steeds, North Carolina. The basket is 14 1/2'' tall, 10 1/2'' long at the rim, and may have been made by Philmore Graves who worked there in the 1930's when this piece was most likely made. He also made some unusual flowerpots and double-loop handled vases among others. I have not seen a larger basket and this one is covered in an incredible glaze- one that I believe was used only by J B Cole. The base glaze is chrome red over which a whitish glaze has been applied. Near the top it has created a mottled green, brown, and whitish glaze. In other places it has created a heavy, drippy, almost volcanic glaze, and has turned the chrome red a chartreuse yellow that is very thick- you can feel the drip edges. It is unmarked and the bottom is red with some green. There are a couple of small glaze flakes at the rim that had been touched up, but the piece is in overall very good condition with no cracks or repairs.
