A compelling, brillantly illustrated black Americana book like none I have ever read before. Over 60 stunning black and white photographs. Vivid recollections of former slaves in the antebellum South - from slave auctions to plantation life, their living conditions, the pain staking labor and abuse to which they were subjected, as well as the moving stories of family life, slave weddings and other special occasions. Christmas time always being bittersweet for them , despite being given 4 or 5 days off, with their knowledge of the painful moment that lay ahead; the first day of the New Year always being set aside for a slave auction. Families torn apart, for years after the Civil War, searched for each other during the turbulent Reconstruction era.

The reality of slavery existed for nearly three million African Americans who lived on the Southern plantations with their relentless work either as field hand or house servants, always united in their misery, their frustration, and their will to survive. Eight chapters entitled: Slave Auction, Work, Family, Living Condition, Abuse, Special Occasions, The Runaway, and Emancipation.
