Offered for your consideration is a c1940s Chinese deeply carved cinnabar box. This huge box was produced in China during the early to mid 1900s for export. It is difficult to appreciate its actual size being 12" in diameter until it is right in front of you. This is 100% antique cinnabar clearly showing the multiple layer lines of lacquer on the carved surfaces. The sides of both top and bottom sections contain continuous scrolling of leaf designs with a smooth background with the top having a very attractive look with a central large open flower head surrounded by (4) quadrants of leaves and similar scrolling to the sides but in a much tighter pattern showing Chinese infuences with background designs in each quadrant. The actual color is a pleasing deep red and not a brite reddish orange that is seen with the later produced pieces. T must be between 200 and 300 hand applied layers of lacquer based on the depth of the relief carving. The body is made from brass with black lacquer applied to the inside and the underneath areas. Condition is perfect with no faults what so ever. Diameter 12" x Height 4-1/2". Even though this box is not a 19c piece, because of the huge size and good workmanship this box deserves a place in any good Asian collection or to be used for a wonderful table piece.
