For sale is a HUGE 5' x 6' COOK'S GOLDBLUME BEER AND ALE SIGN . This is an incredibly rare sign and I don't think you will find another one anywhere on the internet, as I have tried. This sign was made for the F.W. Cook Brewing Company from Evansville, Indiana. The F.W. Cook company went out of business in 1957, although Goldblume Beer continued to be brewed by other breweries.
This sign is in wonderful condition considering the age - it has a few nicks, scrapes, and dents here and there as the photos show and one spot that rusted through on the lower right hand corner, but overall it is in remarkable condition for it's age and size - with the rest of the sign showing hardly any rust. The sign reads "Call for Cook's Goldblume Beer and Ale - Bottled Air Free." and is marked: F.W. Cook Co. Evansville, Ind and also bears a Novelty Worker's Union stamp. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to own a very rare sign. You likely will not every find another one. Due to the rarity of the sign, there is a reserve, but it will be considered reasonable to serious buyers. WE WILL NOT END THE AUCTION EARLY! As the photos show, the sign is made of tin and was made in 2 pieces, which have been tacked onto a wooden frame. I believe that most of the wooden frame is original to the sign, but can not guarantee it. It appears that the lower horizontal piece of the wood frame has been replaced at some point. This sign would make a wonderful addition to someone's collection or as a feature decoration at a bar. It displays incredibly as the photos show. The history of this particular sign is not known, but it was discovered in Knoxville, TN. The buyer must pick this up in Nashville, TN - WE WILL NOT SHIP THIS SIGN DUE TO IT'S VERY LARGE SIZE! Again - we WILL NOT SHIP THE SIGN! the sign can only be picked up locally!!!! It can be carried in a pick-up truck if you strap it down, but depending on the size of your truck bed it might not fit all the way down. We are happy to answer any questions about the sign and will also be happy to send additional photos of the sign to any serious buye rs who would like to see it. Payment must be made within 3 days of the close of the auction. HISTORY OF THE F.W. COOK COMPANY: The City Brewery was founded in 1853 by Frederick Washington Cook and Jacob Rice in what was then a cornfield beyond downtown. It split from the "old brewery" and opened its own at 11 NW 7th St. By 1880, the Cook & Rice City Brewery had an ice house, malt house, stable, and office that covered entire block bounded by 7th (M L King), Sycamore, 8th, and Main. After Rice's death in 1885, it was renamed F W Cook Brewing Co. Upon F.W.'s death in 1913 (at the age of 81), his son Henry ran it until his death in 1929. Then Henry's brother, Charles Cook, took over keeping the F W Cook name. After Prohibition ended in 1933, the company renamed itself F W Cook Co. In early 1950 the brewery completed an extensive remodel of the 7th St offices and the rathskellar. About the same time Anton Hulman, sportsman and financier, bought controlling interest of the brewery. After the workers went on strike 1955, Hulman ceased operations. The brewery closed its doors for good in September 1957 after selling beer it had already made. Their Goldblume brand was brewed in other locations until 1972 and revived by the 1988-1997 reincarnation of the Evansville Brewery . The F W Cook corporation was dissolved January 1961.
