Any plane made of Ebony is very rare. In the Pollak brothers book on "Makers of American Wooden Planes" plane maker H.G. Stilley rates 3 stars which means his planes are very rare. So a very rare maker using a very rare wood makes this a very spectacular plane indeed. H. G. Stilley is about the only west coast plane maker of note. He was lured west during the gold rush in 1850 and stayed on first in San Francisco and later in Oakland Ca. This Ebony Razee style jointer plane is the finest Stilley I am aware of. It was found in the bay area over 40 years ago and is now on the market for the first time. The plane measures 21 1/2 inches long. The base is 2 5/16 inches wide. The iron is a tapered Buck Brothers 1 13/16ths inches wide. It is razor sharp by the way. Condition items of note are an old repair to the tip of the tote. A hole in the wedge and some chips in the base. I took pictures of these areas. I doubt if you will find a nicer Stilley plane any time soon.
