From the ammonite family, goniatites lived during the Carboniferous Period about 200 million years ago. These creatures are now extinct, their closest remaining relative are the squid and the pearly nautilus of the south Pacific. Goniatites had heads with well developed eyes. They also had grasping tentacles to grab their food and swam by squirting water out of the body cavity as a means of propulsion. This ammonite fossil is a fine specimen for your fossil collection.
