You are bidding on a huge signed John Leach Mulchelney Pottery, one-of-a-kind work of British Art Pottery, purchased from a Denver estate. It measures 13 " X 9" (from lip to handle) X 7" (across bottom), approx. Although relatively thinly potted, it weighs about 5 pounds because of its monumental size. Because of its exaggerated size, it is meant to be a work of art rather than a utilitarian piece of pottery. Of course, it may be used as a pitcher if you wish. It holds about a gallon of liquid. This piece is signed with John Leach's arched JL mark. According to his website, only unique pieces that are usually sold in his gallery have this mark. It is also stamped Mulchelney. It is in excellent condition, with no damage. It is dusty, but we don't know if it was ever used. It has fine and expert throwing, with form influenced by Bernard Leach. It has nice patterns and beautiful warm color from the salt-glaze firing techniques used by Leach, and also beautiful textured glazes on the inside and around the lip. As near as we have been able to determine from comparable items and size, this oversize and unique pitcher would probably sell in Leach's gallery for about $700 to $1,000 US dollars. We do not know its age, since it is not dated. We expect it was made sometime within the past 30 years. We received no information about it from the read more
