Item Description

This is an absolutely HUGE croc tooth from the MIDDLE MIOCENE of Florida! Wouldn't you hate to have a run-in with this beast? The tooth measures near 2.5 INCHES in lenth and as big around as my thumb. This was one giant reptile...probably the closest thing to a dinosaur that can be found in the State.

There is some damage that is shown clearly in the photos. The little white spot in the first photo is a little nick that could very easily be darkened with a marker and made almost invisible. For obvious reasons, I made sure to leave it very white and make it so the light was hitting it so you would be able to see the damage as clearly as possible. Nobody likes surprises when you receive a fossil you purchased! Overall, I would say the tooth is in pretty good shape considering its age and the fact that it was found in a creek!

Very few animals have existed as long as this apex predator with so few changes. Fossils of crocodilians have been found from the Jurassic Period ( before the Age of Dinosaurs) that are very similar to the alligators and crocodiles that exist today. Such a long period with little change is a testament to how perfect of a predator it is.

Alligators and crocs have between 75 and 80 functioning teeth and the strongest bite force in the Animal Kingdom. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat any animal small enough for them to overpower, as well as scavenge.
