This knife was acquired shortly after I arrived in thePhilippines in 1976, the first of a number of Moro knives/swords Icollected t It was brought to me by a Muslim trader from Zamboanga, Mindanao. It is not a decorative item, but a working (or fighting) tool. It had been well used when I got it. Although the size of a machete (and could be used in lieu of one), its handle and shape indicate it was intended as a weapon. From tip to tip, it is 22.25" long. The handle, apparently some type of black hardwood, appears to be a carved animal head and is 6" long, with a 1.5" brass band aroud the handle just above the guard, which is brass 1/4 to 3/8" thick. The blade from guard to tip is 16" long, and 1/4" on top at its thickest part. The largest part of the blade is 2-5/8". It all appears to be hand hammered steel. The knife alone weighs 2lbs 6oz. The handle has defects shown in the photos: on top is a gouge about .5"x.25"x.25". on the left bottom are two small gouges, each about .125"x.125"x.125". The blade is stained, but not rusty. The leather of the sheath is old and stitchings are starting to tear. The brass band around the bottom of the handle, above the guard, is slightly loose and will turn about .25". This is a collector's item, a hand-made weapon from a culture that has long had a mastery of producing fine bladed weapons. This
