Offering for your bidding pleasure this wonderful old (100 years) basket . This is one of the largest of the gathering baskets . The basket is made of vine (probably honeysuckle) and hickory . This is a 32 rib basket , measuring 21 inches across the flatest part of the bottom (lengthwise). The basket is 50 inches around the belly including the handle and is 56 inches in length over the top of the handle . This basket is from Western North Carolina , which is a well known area for primitive baskets . The vine and splints are dry on this basket and I was tempted to wet them and reset the top splint (pic 2) , however I decided I would present the item as found . It is an easy fix if the buyer feels the need to do so .The handle is one continous splint which is notched at the bottom for lashing . The sides at the handles have small nails but the bottom does not appear to have ever been nailed . The basket displays well but could use a light cleaning . Basket has no traces of paint . This large gathering basket has seen lots of use , probably for vegetables , cotton , tobacco and maybe eggs( though it is large for eggs . The buttocks/gizzard shape and short handle are for ease of carrying on the hip , even when full . Thank you for your interest .
