It would be difficult to find such an outstanding example of an American classic--"THE YO-YO QUILT"! We found this one a year ago, at a local upstate New York small town outdoor sale, held at their museum. The ladies were raising money for museum restoration. The woman who sold this to us said her grandmother had made it during the depression years, using remnants of flour and feed sacks she had saved and traded. It had been stored in a cedar trunk of the owner's for 50 years, when Granny had made it a gift to her. Entirely HAND-stitched [an incredible feat, by any standard], she had never used it! Admittedly, it IS HUGE! The pictures show it draped on two twin beds pushed together and there is still room to spare! We counted 2,499 yo-yo buttons, each 1 and 1/2 inch in diameter. The quilt measures 93 by 94 inches!!! There are 42 multi colored squares bordered by solid yellow ones. Incredibly, we found only ONE side of ONE yo-yo which needed to be re-attached!! We challenge the new owner to find it! On the quilt edges are three sides of three rows of yellow yo-yos each. A very cute "make-do" appears on one corner, where there are three multi-colored yo-yos in a spot we think should have had three yellow ones. I can only imagine the seamstress clutching her head and shouting,"Oh, no!! I"m short 3 yellows!! Guess I'll have to use 3 of these left-over colored ones!! Enough, already!!!!!" It weighs 8 pounds, and we will split the shipping if the quilt reaches a minimum of 150.00!! NO reserve. we sincerely hope this beauty finds a loving new home!
