Up for auction is an elegantly carved HUMMINGBIRD fetish by Zuni Pueblo artisan Justin Red Elk . This fine piece stands about 1&1/4 inches tall, 1&1/4 inches long including the beak and about 1/2 inch wide. It is carved from rainbow calsilica. Was most fetish carvings have eyes of inlaid turquoise or jet, the tiny eyes in this piece appear to be features of the stone itself. The beak appears to be shell. The artist has signed the piece, "RED ELK", on the bottom. This is an authentic Native American hand-carved item and comes direct from the Zuni Pueblo in northern New Mexico. In Zuni Indian tradition, each animal is believed to have innt powers or qualities that may aid the owner of a fetish carved in the image of that animal.
