DOWNSIZING! This auction is for a LIKE NEW, NEVER USED, large, vintage, hand embroidered towel, made by a Palóc woman in the Hollókő area of Northern Hungary, where I bought it. It was woven of homespun flax / linen fibers and measures about 30 and 1/2" long and 17" wide . It was embroidered with a 3 and 1/4" wide band of VERY FINE needle weaving stitches, of pink, yellow, and purple roses, and green leaves, about 4" from the short edges. This kind of fancy towel was a standard item in a young country woman's dowry in the olden days in Hungary, that usually she herself made "from scratch" to show off her home-making abilities. She spun the yarn from hemp or flax, that most likely her parents grew on their farm, she wove the cloth, then embroidered it with traditional designs. Depending on the wealth of the family, a young woman would have dozens of these towels, made in different sizes, that she stored till marriage, to be used in her new home. However, the prettiest of these towels were never used , but were given to the wedding guests as keepsakes . This towel is in excellent vintage condition . It is part of my needlework collection, and is stored in a smoke-free, animal-free, clean environment. It will make a great GIFT for SOMEONE SPECIAL, or an addition to YOUR vintage linen collection . Please ask questions before you bid. read more
