A Venise Par P. Santini. Chez Mr. Remondini. Description: Striking and hightly detailed copper engraved map of Hungary. The map includes also kingdom of Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria . The map gives several details concerning fortified cities, towns, rivers, castles, chruches, roads, woods, mountains, lakes, etc. A large decorative title cartouche in in the lower rigupper left corner . The map represents a Venetian edition of Vaugondy's map from "Atlas Universel" printed in 1776-84 by Remondini . Date: 1784 ( undated ) Dimension: Pa per size approx.: cm 75,7 x 53,2 Condition: Very strong a nd dark impression on very strong paper. Paper with chains and wiremarks. Original colors to the outlines . Wide margins. Small foxing and browning. Small tears. Map folded as issued. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Mapmaker: Paolo Santini ( 1729 Venice - Belluno 1793) was a priest of the church of Santa Maria Formosa in Venice and professor of drawing at the public schools of the Jesuits. From the best papers from the time he realized his brother Francis, the famous Universal Atlas , divided into two volumes and contains 123 cards. Francesco Santini he published between 1776 and 1780. Subsequently, the branches etching of the cards were purchased in 1781 from the press Remondini Bassano reissued the atlas. Cartographer: Gilles (1688 - 1766) and Didier (c. 1723 - 1786) Robert de Vaugondy were map publishers, engravers, and cartographers active in Paris during the mid-18th century. The father and son team are descended from the important Sanson cartographic firm, from whom they inherited much of their initial material. The Vaugondys were well respected for the detail and accuracy of their maps. They were known for making excellent use of the considerable resources available in 18th century Paris to produce the most accurate and fantasy-free maps possible. The Vaugondys compiled their maps based upon their own superior geographic knowledge, scholarly research, the journals of contemporary explorers and missionaries, and direct astronomical observation. Many Vaugondy maps are also highly praised for their title cartouches, which identify each of the sources referenced - an unusual level of scholar decorum for 18th century France.
