Limited edition aviation art print Hunters in the Desert signed in pencil by JG-27 pilots EDUARD NEUMANN, FRANZ ELLES, FRIEDRICH KORNER, FRITZ KELLER and artist ROBERT TAYLOR . This print depicts a low level celebratory pass by North African virtuoso Hans-Joachim Marseille following his 100 th victory. His comrades are seen climbing out of the Messerschmitt Me109 fighters amid the heat of the desert air strip. One of the most famous of the Luftwaffe units, JG-27 was the first to arrive in North Africa in April 1941. The pilots of JG-27 had already fought in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain and their arrival in the western desert provided fierce opposition to the RAF. They typically attacked from superior height, the Me109 having a better rate of climb than the Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk fighters ranged against them by the RAF. This advantage waned later in the desert war when the tropicalized Spitfire MkV made an appearance. Marseille claimed over 150 victories, more than any other Luftwaffe Ace against RAF pilots in World War II. We like Hunters in the Desert at the gallery because it features excellent JG-27 signatures and two great points of view of the Me109; one in flight and the other on the ground.
