Available for auction is this fantastic old whiskey jug from Huntington, West Virginia. This great piece of southern stoneware holds approximately 1/2 gallon, stands just over 10 inches tall (to the rim, not cork), has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches, and a circumference of 17 inches. The blue printing on the jug's front reads: ZIEGLER & BEHREND - THE - BIG MAIL ORDER LIQUOR HOUSE, HUNTINGTON, W. VA. It comes with an old corn cob cork.
My research leads me to believe this jug to be quite old; I am unable to find any records of Ziegler & Behrend after 1910, so I must assume this jug to be 1910 at the latest. The piece is in beautiful condition. The metal handle has a very primitive plastic on it which has cracked as is expected of early plastics (shown in pictures 1 and 3), but I feel it is a testament to the condition of this jug that any bits of that plastic remain at all. I have found only one small chip on the back near the bottom (as shown in picture 5), and only 2 small areas where the glazing has been scuffed (shown in pictures 3 and 6). There is a small impression on the front at the bottom (shown in picture 4) but I believe this to be from the production of the jug, as it is glazed and not "rough" at all as chips usually are. There are no cracks. The blue printing on the front has a great quilt pattern sort of border and very clear text.
