About the Artist: Born near Beijing in 1947, Peter Yong grew up amid a period of turmoil. At the age of five, he decided he would become an artist. Yong has never wavered from that goal. A widely acknowledged master of Chinese contemporary art, his work is rich in symbolism. The luminous, almost Renaissance forms in Yong’s work often represent virtues and/or vices. Yong’s finely tuned brushstrokes have been called “almost like a symphony” and “superb modern Renaissance works” by art critics. His main influences are Vermeer and Rembrandt, along with many modern-day figurative realists. Yong build layers of translucent color with the same age-old painting techniques. Yong is a professor at Chinese Beijing College. He is also chairman of the Chinese Oil Painters’ Union. Yong campaigns strongly for emphasis on classical skills in contemporary art instruction.
