About the Artist: Born near Beijing in 1947, Peter Yong grew up amid a period of turmoil. At the age of five, he decided he would become an artist. Yong has never wavered from that goal. A widely acknowledged master of Chinese contemporary art, his work is rich in symbolism. The luminous, almost Renaissance forms in Yong’s work often represent virtues and/or vices. Yong’s finely tuned brushstrokes have been called “almost like a symphony” and “superb modern Renaissance works” by art critics. His main influences are Vermeer and Rembrandt, along with many modern-day figurative realists. Yong build layers of translucent color with the same age-old painting techniques. Yong is a professor at Chinese Beijing College. He is also chairman of the Chinese Oil Painters’ Union. Yong campaigns strongly for emphasis on classical skills in contemporary art instruction. Yong currently lives and works in suburban Beijing. His work has been exhibited widely throughout China. Yong's inspiration, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 – 1905) was a French academic painter.
