Hutschenreuther Six (6) 10 Inch Diameter Dinner Plates Hand-Painted with Green & Gold Scalloped Floral Design Ink stampedon the back of 5 of the plates is “Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria & Favorite” and the number 25 is pressed into the porcelain. One is marked “Josephine Bavaria Favorite”. Based on my research it appears as though these white porcelain plates were manufactured in Germany in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s for export to other countries, then hand-painted by factory artists or by private citizens. Plates of this type were frequently hand-painted by privileged ladies. These particular 6 plates are signed on the back by Nellie Grant. Although the plates are not dated by her I purchased along with these a platter painted identically that she signed and dated 1913, which is listed separately, but shown in this listing in photo #6. Might this be the daughter of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant? His daughter, Nellie Grant, lived from July 4, 1985 until August 30, 1922. Certainly fits the timeline. But of course, I have no idea if these plates were in fact painted by her. I’m sure there was more than one Nellie Grant in that era. But, it’s kind of fun to think that they may have been painted by her. These plates are in really good condition for their age with no chips or cracks.
