Acquired from an estate and selling with no reserve. This listing is for an ID'd Civil War CDV Photo of 28th Kentucky Infantry Surgeon. A shoulder length uniformed portrait of Captain James A. Postr, 28th Kentucky Infantry with period inked inscription along lower front margin reading "James A. Post / Asst. Surg. 28th Ky. Inft." The cdv has an illustrated backsmark of J.C. Elrod's Gallery, Louisville. James enlisted as an Assistant Surgeon on Nov. 8, 1861 and was promoted to Surgeon on Dec. 22, 1864. The 28th Ky. Infantry under the command of Col. Wm. P. Boone and later his son Col. J. Rown Boone were organized in Louisvillein July of 1862. The Regiments first duty was guarding railroad in Kentucky and 120 of the men were captured by CSA Gen. John H. Morgan's cavalry during that year. The Regiment was used as mounted infantry in Tenn. and were engaged in numerous skirmishes throughout the state in '63. Their first major battle was with Rosecran's Army at Chickamauga. In Jan. of 1864 the Regiment were used around Chatanooga and on Jan. 22nd near Dalton, Tn. The Regiment was engaged with the enemy and captured a number of troops, arms and supplies. The Regiment, now under the command of Col. J. Rowan Boone played an important part in all the battles leading up to the Atlanta campaign, along with the 2nd Ky. Calvalry. At Kennesaw Mt. they and the 40th Indiana took a leading part in the great charge of that important battle. Later battles included Pine Mt., Peachtree Creek, capture of Atlanta, Spring Hill and Franklin, after which they were ordered to Texas and were finally mustered out Jan. 1st, 1866.
