Beautiful fully ID'd Union Cavalry Saber - Identified to Sgt. George H. Bell of Troop B of the 8th Illinois Cavalry.
This saber, scabbard and buff wrist strap/sword knot are in excellent condition. The saber blade is unsharpened without any dings, and minimal tarnishing. The hilt is excellent and retains the leather stopper, leather grips and brass wiring. There is very slight loss to the leather grip on one side. The buff sword knot is in good condition, but shows signs of being in the attic, the tassles, while all present are pretty dry, and the strap has a tear but is pliable and has both retaining loops. I cannot find a maker mark or inspection stamp on the sword. I know sometimes these are light, I just figured it was an import. George H. Bell (1843-1917) enlisted in the 8th Illinois Cavalry and remained with the regiment until is was mustered out in July 1865. He was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant. The roll call for June 30th, 1863 lists him as present for duty and he was in combat during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg under General Bufford. Saber retains a worn tag written on: "This was my father's sword he carried in the Civil War - George H. Bell - " It listed the dates of his birth and death. The backside is signed by Bertha C. Bell who was Sgt. Bell's only child, and is dated July 7, 1967. Records show Bertha died in 1969. Also with the saber, when I purchased it, a copy of George H. Bell's mustering out paperwork was included from the National Archives. Interesting to note it lists his requirement to forfeit pay of $10 for two months for retaining a saber and equipment!
