I DIG DINOS is proud to have for sale: HUGE COLOMBIAN COPAL You are bidding on a good looking piece of copal (young amber). A stunning centre piece to your collection. A massive 730g in weight or 1.61 lbs. A truly wonderful and asthetic piece of natural art.A wonderful freestanding example of fossilized tree resin. You will be the envy of other collectors with this sample. TERMITE order Isoptera (including SOLDIERS) MITES order Acari (living on the termites antennae!!) BARK BEETLE order Coleoptera, subfamily Scolytinae T is a small fly (Diptera) with underdeveloped wings in this piece. I have speculated before on what these are and still I am undecided. They have either fallen into the resin shortly after hatching but given this is the second piece with one in that seems unlikely. I have read of termites harvesting flies for food for the young or this fly lives along side the termites in their burrows and has lost the need for wings. Whatever way it is a great inclusion in this stunning piece. This piece also has some ENHYDROS, trapped water with a small moving air bubble. This is genuine Colombian copal that has been aged up to about 16 million years old but most estimates run at about 2 million years old. The piece also has a natural hole running through one end w t was obviously a root at some point that it flowed over. Younger than Baltic amber and not yet gone through the process to turn it into real amber. Is a bit softer than Baltic amber but no less beautiful. MEASUREMENTS: around 175mm at its widest and 730g in weight.
