A Vintage Classic... The VINTAGE CHRISTMAS NATIVITY set was produced by the IDEAL DOLL Corporation in 1958. The self-contained set includes: a heavy cardboard boxed nativity with Baby Jesus, an 8 1/4" vinyl doll with inset brown glass eyes and moveable head & arms, on a bed of 'straw', in a heavy cardboard manger. The rest of the characters-- Mary, Joseph and two lambs are light-weight cardboard "pop-up" figures. When the lid is opened, the attached elastic cords(which have lost their stretch years ago) would lift them. The front of the box states: "THE MOST WONDERFUL STORY"... and on the end is printed "IDEAL, PRODUCED UNDER THE DIRECTION AND GUIDANCE OF CHURCH AUTHORITIES, 1958, IDEAL TOY CORPORATION, MADE IN USA". The box is in the form of a book, burgandy with gold lettering. It measues 16 1/2" tall, 12 1/4" wide and 4 1/2" thick. The pop-ups are in good condition with no rips or tears. The carboard insert has two small tears at the head of the manger. There is very little wear to the outside of the box for an item of this age. Baby Jesus and the manger straw are in their origal wrappers, only taken out to be photographed. There was some controversy over this set when it was released in 1958.
