Nice origional untouched Civil War belt buckle, belt, and cartridge box that is identified to what I believe is a Massachusetts soldier. I got it from a land owner in Red Cross NC, the site of the surrender of much of Johnstons Army of the Tennessee, about 20 years ago. We found many relics in his fields. After hunting, he asked me if I wanted a cannon ball. It was an 80 lb. solid shot that he said came from Whitsett NC, near Red Cross and was unrelated to the group listed He then brought out this group in a paper bag. It came from his family and his name was Carol, I believe. He was in poor health and is most probably dead now. He showed me a post war picture of his ancestor wearing it, along with a full uniform and Hardee hat. He was never able to get back up to Massachusetts to get the rest. The pictures display the condition well. The name stenciled onto the belt seems to be C.L. Abbott Co. C. 23 M. V. The image that shows this has been darkened to show it better. This group has never been out of my house since coming from the family and has never been offered for sale. The cartridge box does not show signs of having a box plate on it?? The marking on the box is GARUELSON&COVELL LEWSTON. MS 1863. As shown in the photos, the belt rig is broken at the place the arrow hooks go into it. The broken piece was in the box and included. The outside strap to the box is also broken and 3 pieces of it were found in it and are included. It seems that t was a crimp with a pair of plyers to one side of the plate also visiable in the photos. Nice identified group, as pure as it gets. No reserve. Shipping includes insurance. Good luck.
