Greetings! Up for bids is a wonderful group securely identified to Private George J. W. Teagarden, Company B, 63rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. In addition to a circa 1862 cdv, t are three post-war (c.1890-1910) images of Teagarden posing with his wife, Maria, as well a patriotic token (dated 1863) and a small GAR pin, which undoubtedly belonged to Teagarden. One of the post-war photos, in fact, shows Teagarden proudly displaying his GAR membership badge. Finally, and rather oddly, the lot includes a Maine GAR requisition form although it's anyone's guess as to how it became connected with the other items.
A search through the Indiana Adjutant General's Report (Vol. VI, p. 22) indicates George J. W. Teagarden, residence of Covington, Fountain County, Indiana, mustered into active service as a Private with Company B, 63rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry on 1 May 1862. However, Private Teagarden was subsequently reported as having deserted his company on 16 May 1862--just over two weeks after his mustering! Assuming this report is correct, Teagarden likely "jumped ship" while his regiment was guarding Confederate POW's at Camp Morton, Indianapolis. Further review of Vol. VIII, p. 792, Adjutant General's Report, indicates that Teagarden was listed on the rolls as a deserter as late as 1868. However, Teagarden apparently managed to clear his record at some point during, or after, the war given that he later became a member (presumably in good standing) of the GAR and almost certainly obtained a government veteran pension. One thing is certain: one of the photographer gallery stamps establishes that Teagarden moved west, to the environs of Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois (about 65 miles northwest of Peoria), sometime after his service ended and resided t for many years. All of the above could lead to a potentially fascinating story; however, I will leave further speculations and research to the winning bidder! I regretfully have no provenance for this group other than I acquired it about a year ago from an Ontario, Canada (!) dealer. Needless to say, the story behind how this lot ended up in Canada would undoubtedly be fascinating. Questions? Please feel free to send a message and I will respond as quickly as possible. I'll start bidding at a low $9.99, with no reserve, and see what the "EBay Gods" have in store for me! Good luck!
