This is an absolutely original Presentation officers sword, dated 1861. The pommel cap of the hilt is marked "Lieut. Hm. R. Reed / From his friends / Pittsburgh Pa / Oct 12/61." "U.S" is also marked (etched) on the blade. The sword is well worn with numerous dings and chips to the blade, apparently from combat use. The steel is heavily pitted and much of the etching is no longer visible. The brass hilt has an even and pleasing patina, also exhibiting wear and damage from combat. This is a very collectible sword in acceptable condition, which has been IDENTIFIED. Identified swords are extremely rare and are demanding considerable premiums. The blade is 30 1/2" long. This sword and markings are absolutely original, and I will guarantee this. Bid with confidence.
