ILDJARN-NIDHOGG Hardangervidda Part I 2xLP __________________________________________________________ Hearse Records (2008) NEW / UNPLAYED / SEALED [DESCRIPTION] DESCRIPTION: I can imagine how confusing it might have been for any black metal fans that came to the Hardangervidda series via Ildjarn's earlier EP's and albums of ultra-distorted, minimalist Norwegian black metal like Strength And Anger and Det Frysende Nordariket . Those works from the mid-1990's married insanely distorted guitars and simplistic but intensely hypnotic hammerbeats that have often drawn comparison to trancey techno rhythms, and early Ildjarn in raw black metal mode pretty much set the template for the buzzfuck armageddon punknoise black metal of bands like Akitsa, Malveillance, Ancestors, Bone Awl, Ash Pool, Alkerdeel, and likeminded outfits. But t was this other side to Ildjarn's genius, a penchant for creating immensely beautiful ambient synthesizer suites that would alternate with the releases of blasted, corruscating black metal, and which reached it's nadir with the Hardangervidda in 2002, a collaboration with Nidhogg ( who was also a member of another one of Ildjarn's black metal bands from the early 1990's, Sort Vokter). Composed almost entirely using synthesizers, the Hardangervidda album is made up of thirteen tracks that evoke the birth and death of a single day on the mountain plateau of the same name in Norway. Beginning with "Sunrise" and continuing through peices entitled "Daybreak", "Blissful Mountain View", "Fleeing Herd", and ending with "Sunset" and "Night", the album is a series of symphonic synthscapes that sound like ambient film soundtrack music, and t's absolutely nothing to suggest Ildjarn's black metal side. At the same time, though, the themes of wilderness and nature that are so prevalent in early Norwegian black metal are amplified even moreso , and each track evokes images of a burning sun cresting over the Hårteigen mountain, cold alpine winds rushing over the rocky, treeless barrens and mirror sufaces of the pools and lakes that spot the Hardangervidda, the thunder of reindeer hooves crashing across the mossy plains. The music is like a dark New Age, very Eno-esque in fact, with captivating, emotive melodies soaring over repetitive swells of droning synths, with drums and clean guitars sometimes coming in to accompany the ambient keys on one or two tracks. If I could compare this to anything, it would be to the eerie and beautiful works of composer Angelo Badalamenti ( Twin Peaks , Blue Velvet , A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors , etc.,), the aforementioned Brian Eno, and Tangerine Dream, but far more minimal and repetitious and desolate. Obviously this is a completely different sound than Ildjarn's pure primitive blackthrash trances, but these different facets of Ildjarn's art both serve to create a similiar ambient effect. Hardangervidda was originally released on CD in 2002 by Norse League Productions, but is now available in a deluxe double LP vinyl edition from the French black metal label Hearse Productions, presented in a beautiful black glossy gatefold sleeve that features equally beautiful black and white photos of the Hardangervidda wilderness, and pressed on thick, white vinyl.
