Description: Striking and hightly detailed copper engraved very large 1849 Depot de la Marine's double page sea chart detailing the coast of Réunion. Map includes some coasatal profiles . Seal of the Depot Général de la Marine in the bottom leftt corner and the title is in left aside . Date: 1849 ( dated ) Dimension: Paper size approx.: cm 99,3 x 67,3 Condition: Very strong a nd dark impression on strong paper. Paper with watermark. Uncolored as issued. Good margins . Small foxing. Tear to the bollom along centre fold, renforced on the verso. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Cartographer: Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (fl. 1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts.
