Superb Imperial Russian presentation kovsh in the medieval style by Gustav Klingert, one of RussiaÃ,Â's finest silversmiths. The ribbed body is separated from the rim by a simple ropetwist band. The rim is decorated with red and green glass cabochons. The handle has a very nice shape with a pronounced undercurve. Kovshi were originally used as drinking vessels. Extraordinary examples were made for Czars to give as presentation pieces throughout the centuries, but the tradiation gradually died away. The Imperial family and other people of means returned to the traditional of giving kovshi as special honorary gifts. This example is in a particularly traditional medieval style. The kovsh is hallmarked on the bottom and on the handle for Moscow, 1908-17, and has the makerÃ,Â's mark for Gustav Klingert.
