This is without a doubt the greatest single piece of American Pottery we have EVER listed on Ebay! If you are a serious collector of early American Pottery, please take the time to go through this description. This is a MUSEUM WORTHY important piece. In short, this is an Original 1875 - 1880 Mug made by the World Famous Early American Potter, Isaac Davis, during a time when he was in business without partner in Trenton, NJ. During this time, in his employ was the very young 16 to 20 year old Lenox who was learning how to become a designer under Isaac Davis' supervision, who moved him up from the decorating department to the design department. At the age of 16 Lenox offered Isaac Davis a year of free service in exchange for teaching him the pottery trade. After the years end, Davis offered Lenox a excellent salary and full time position at the Trenton Pottery Company. According to the book Marks of American Potters by Edwin Atlee Barber, the ULTRA-RARE markings on this wonderful mug date it to a period w Isaac Davis had just bought The Prospect Hill Pottery in Trenton, NJ and was in business alone from 1875 to 1880 and had displayed as an important exhibitionist for white graniteware at the Centennial Convention in Philadelphia in 1876. The hallmark on this mug is the British Arms with full markings around the oval shield border with forward facing large faced Lion on left and Unicorn profile on right. The monogram in the center of the hallmark shield is ID intersected, for Isaac Davis. The writing under the British Arms design is "T. Pottery Works, Warranted," which stands for Trenton Pottery Works. The warranted stamp by Isaac Davis was an extended effort at the time to ensure Americans who were used to the quality of British Potteries that indeed the pottery piece was quality by British Standards. The British Arms use was also an attempt to imply the same. The ID in the center is SPECIFICALLY Isaac Davis'. T is a GORGEOUS Multicolored floral pattern on either side of this mug which is Hand Painted and quite unique in VIBRANT details of red, blue, teal green, and some violet tones. This design may have been handpainted either by Davis or Lenox themselves. Isaac Davis used the British Arms and would place either I. Davis or a company indication under the hallmark from the 1875 to 1880 date. After 1880 Davis no longer used his own ID monogram in the shield. He was involved as an owner / potter in Trenton Pottery Company (not to be confused with Trenton Potteries ), Prospect Hill Pottery, Greenwood Pottery, and Glasgow Pottery, all in Trenton. T was one piece of Isaac Davis Pottery on display in the Pennsylvania Museum (which is now the Philadelphia Museum of Art), an ironstone bread plate which depicts an image of the Horticultural Hall in Philadelphia during which it was initially displayed at the Centennial Exposition. This other museum piece bares a nearly identicle hallmark with the Isaac Davis ID monogram and British Arms on the bread plate. I have not seen any original known Isaac Davis early Trenton Pottery specimens for private or public sale. This is a truly ONCE IN A LIFETIME opportunity to own this single piece as a keystone to your serious American Pottery collection! Remember, this is one of the men who single handedly started Pottery works in 19th century America so that it could be portrayed as the same quality that the population was used to getting from Britain and Europe. He individually inspired one of the largest pottery, china, porcelain markets in the world, Lenox, from the very beginning. This piece is a significant marker of a turning point in the world of American Pottery, not to mention that the floral design work, and body are amazing and beautiful. This mug is solid and sits flush. T are no chips! the glaze is beautiful, the curved lines are dynamic, the handle is excellent and the crazing is everyw but NO chipping. It measures almost 4" tall, almost 4" across at the open mouth rim, and approximately 3 1/2" across at it's base rim. This piece may even have been at th...
