A superb quality ANTIQUE ERSARI TURKMEN STRIPE CHUVAL for the collector. Central Asia. West Turkestan. Middle Amu Darya area. Circa: 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Exact size: 3'-0" x 5'-6" (92 x 168 cm). Woven with the highest quality of silky-to-the-touch wool and deeply saturated natural dyes including an electric blue/green, cherry red, and canary yellow, this lovely antique Ersari family Turkoman weaving shows minor wear and moth bite areas in the field and has been slightly reduced at both the top and bottom, none of which detract from the eye appeal. The sides are slightly raggedy, too, with remnants of the original overcastings. It is woven on a foundation of natural dark brown goathair warps and natural medium brown wool wefts and possesses a soft floppy handle. Still, considering the fact that this weaving is between 150 and 200 years of age, it shows well and is an extremely rare example of its type. A superb acquisition specimen for the specialist collector looking for the oldest, rarest, and most beautiful antique Turkmen weaving examples for their holdings. This is a fine, publishable Ersari-group chuval that will make a stunning wall hanging and glows intensely when illuminated by soft lighting.
