METAMORPHOSIS Antiques Important Book of Hours, Leaf, France Early 15th Century A leaf from an important illuminated manuscript, Book of Hours, Use of Rouen, in Latin and French, on vellum, circa 1450, (190 x 140 mm). Sixteen lines of text per page, ruled in red ink, written in dark brown ink in a fine regular formal gothic script, rubrics in bright burnished gold, line fillers throughout in blue and red and white on a burnished gold ground, capitals touched in yellow, foliate one-line initials and similar two-line initials at the start of hymns, prayers, lessons, etc., but more elaborate three-line initials at the start of Hours. Extremely fine borders with conventional acanthus primarily in blue and gold and numerous species of naturalistic flowers and plants in various colors and gold. Spaces are filled by gold ivy leaf decoration on fine black tendrils. Condition of this leaf is fine. **Offered in a beautiful black and gold frame and professionally matted under acid free UV protectorate Plexiglas, 8x10 Custom Frame, Ivory Matte, Double Sided. Every Leaf is in very fine condition (choice selected) and would make a great addition for any serious illuminated manuscript collector. These are all from a large private collection which is being thinned . All were professionally custom framed by one of the world leading Medieval manuscripts experts; Griffon's Medieval Manuscripts. ** * Note* Please see all photographs: This leaf is mounted in reverse as the verso has even more detail and larger borders. Pictures shown are in order back to front as it was mounted the first pictures are of the actual back of leaf and last of the front. It is mounted with the back to the front of the frame. Both sides are viewable in the mounting. Most leaves are from Books of Hours which are personal prayer books of a devout, status-conscious society.
