is a very interesting Two Tier Faience Sweet Meat Serving Piece with the Fleur de Lis mark authorized for the use of Honore Savy Marseille, France. The server consists of a base about 7 1/4" x 8 1/2" from which arises a scaffolding of branches supporting a tier of four bowls, followed by a second tier of one large bowl. Height is about 7 3/4". Width and length at the extremes of bottom tier is about 11" x 8 3/4". This server is extensively polychromed with flowers, beetles, and with country story scenes in the bowls. Wonderful colors - browns, green, blue, red, royal purple, purple red, yellow. The base is adorned with flowers and several beetles from which flows the scaffolding of Oak branches terminating under each bowl in Oak leaves and acorns - and more flowers and beetles (beetles are always orange with black spots like lady bugs). Bowls and base are all gilded on edges. The scenes in the bowls are well executed miniature paintings which I am sure tell a story. The large bowl has a man on a donkey tending sheep with his dog with cottages in the background and trees - verdure. The other scenes in the lower three bowls - I do not know the order of these in telling the story. Central to the story seems to be the acquisition of a horse (instead of a donkey?). It is fun to speculate. Surrounding each scene, are of course, more flowers! On the bottom of the base is a very nice red Fleur de Lis attributed to Honore Savy of Marseille who was given the honor to use this mark by the King's Brother Monsieur ("Manufactur de Monsieur frere du Roy"), and was used by Savy after 1777. In Marseilles, Savy innovated several colors and techniques. He was often imitated, but seldom surpassed in Marseille. Condition of this piece is generally good, with the exception of a repair on the base which shows as a crack (see photos). In addition, t is one shallow 1/8" x 1/4" chip on the very bottom edge of the base. I see no other chips or cracks. T are some food stains in the bowls and light crazing overall. Some wear is evident on gilded bowl edges. I like this piece because of its naturalistic design, brilliant polychrome flowers and beetles, and the interesting miniature story scenes. If you are a collector of faience, especially from Marseilles or perhaps even Savy, you will want to bid on this piece!!!
