IMPORTANT 18th CENTURY FRENCH PRIVATEER'S CHEST-A SUPER IMPORTANT FIND! Allston Antiques is thrilled to offer you this remarkable antique sea chest made of oak (possibly yew wood) with highly engraved decorative iron straps, huge metal handles and old world hand hammered iron rivets. It is a difficult to date this piece. We are confident that is no later than the early 18th century. We recently received from very valuable input on this chest from a curator at the Peabody Essex Museum of Massaachusetts. We were informed that this is in reality a French Privateer's (Pirates) chest. On its front are brass tacks spelling out “PLS 1301” and for all we know it could very well be a dating. We obtained it with a museum deacquisition number and label. We remain absolutely stunned by this find! Inside was a very important US Navy achieves photograph of the CSS Flag Ship Tennessee being captured by the US Merrimack and other historical maritime objects. This extremely early photograph in and of itself is a major find which we will be offering after we can obtain some more information about it. This sea chest comes from the estate of a world famous Connecticut artist. We regret being unable to obtain any additional information about its provenace. This sea chest is 45 ½” long, 25” wide and 26” tall and one of the most interesting maritime offerings available .
