Presenting a museum quality mid 18th century beveled glass mirror. The dore bronze metalwork is exquisite, delicate and imperial. The salmon colored silk is protected by glass. The hand painted picture signed "Byervlo" is on ivory and is of Madam Pompadour, French King Louis XV's "official" mistress. The floral motif was typical of paintings of the subject reflecting Madam de Pompadour's love of flowers. Again, this floral design extends to the soft metalwork throughout the mirror. Later in life, her dalliance with the king was much less important as she became a devoted adviser. Her friendship with Voltaire and other prominent intellectuals of the period ushered in the "Age of Reason." This picture is of Madam in her younger days and depicts her in a costume reminiscent of her theatrical background. Undoubtedly made for the royal court, this mirror reflects the highest French mixed media art of the period. Sophisticated in the pastel colors, magnificent in the subtle bronze work, and almost translucent in appearance, this piece could have easily graced the bureau of Madam Pompadour herself. A stupendous piece of art, history and function, this is a once in a lifetime chance to have a royal piece at regular prices. This mirror is in excellent condition and measures 11 1/4 in length by 4 1/2 inches in width. As a display piece or a working mirror, this is as good as it gets.
