This powerful netsuke was masterfully carved - most certainly - by a skilled member of the famous Kyoto School and bears the artist signature next to natural Himotoshi on the underside. Depicted is a majestic tiger whose striped fur is neatly incised. The wildcat is shown in an attentive posture with its mouth slightly open showing off its dangerous teeth. A masterpiece of its own is the animal's tail curled up at the tiger's back and also the underside is excellently rendered. The superior artistic qualities of the carver are best visible at the muscles on the tiger's back, the natural movement of the tail or the powerful facial expression of the beast. Boasting a very compact dense shape and a stunning authentic patina, this is an exceptional piece of Japanese Kyoto School netsuke art! Partially borrowed from Chinese mythology, the tiger enjoyed great popularity in Japan. It is said to live a thousand years and was adopted as a symbol of the warrior class. The tiger Tora is the third animal in the Junishi zodiac, an organization of the calendar into 12-year cycles, each represented by an animal associated with specific personality traits. It is widely believed that people born in the year of the tiger are courageous, adventurous, playful and generous to loved ones.
