Up for auction is a very rare and top notch quality one of a kind antique impressionist oil painting on canvas by American Landscapist William Elmer Johnson. The artist's hand written title for this painting is "#10 The Old Dam, Cheyenne River", the painting was most likely painted in South Dakota since we have had other works by this artist with South Dakota locations. The painting is being sold unframed and measures 16 inches high by 19 inches across. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and dated 25 for 1925. The painting is titled on the upper back stretcher bars by the artist. The painting is in very good condition but may benefit from a light cleaning and varnishing. William Elmer Johnson painted and worked mostly in the Minnesota and South Dakota of the Upper Plaines and Near west. We have had works with Minnesota and South Dakota locations and being the Cheyenne River it is possible that this painting could be from the state of Wyoming . To us the painting has an influence of the French School or that of the Traditional American impressionist coming from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts of the early 1920s.
