This beautiful cluster ring is of traditional design from the Tsarist era. Set with an oval cabochon sapphire weighing approximately 7 cts., surrounded by 14 Old European-cut diamonds weighing approximately 2.50 cts., the quality of workmanship is exceptional. Like many Russian cluster jewels, the center stone is cut in a high cabochon with even color saturation of an intense deep purplish blue color. The surrounding lively and well-matched diamonds are of fine quality, with a wonderful sparkle and scintillation characteristics of rare Russian antique-cut diamonds. The diamonds contrast beautifully with the deep blue sapphire and are bezel-set in silver above an intricate rose gold openwork gallery typical of fine St. Petersburg gold jewelry (see image 2). An exceptional and rare treasure to mark a major anniversary or to add to your jewelry collection. Gem-set cluster measures 7/8 x 5/8 in. (2.2 x 1.6 cm.) (l x w). From the base of the gold mount to the top of sapphire, the ring stands 1/2 in. (1.3 cm.) high. Size-6 1/2. Sold with description if requested, and fitted ring box.
Antique Diamonds: Distinctive & Rare An early form of the modern brilliant developed by British and Dutch cutters, the Old European-cut diamond has a higher crown, or upper portion and smaller table (top facet). Unlike the cushion-shaped Old mine cut, it has a more circular outline. Contrary to popular belief these antique-cut diamonds often afford more brilliance and scintillation than todays modern-cuts. Connoisseurs and gem lovers now actively seek antique-cut diamonds and other gemstones for their rarity and beauty.
