An early chip carved pantry box in excellent untouched condition, with a wonderful patina. This piece dates to the last quarter of the 18th C. & is dated what I believe is 1782 on the bottom, it also has the initials AJG & EPJG just above the date. I am not quite sure whether this is American or European in origin, though the wood might be Maple, which would make it American. The carvings are second to none, very detailed & well done. Please see all pictures as they give a more detailed description of the piece & its condition. It is contructed with square wooden pegs holding the top & bottom in place & an intertwined lace for the sides. There are some later nails added to secure the piece where the wooden pegs are missing & a couple areas of thin splits on the top. A wonderful piece of early Americana offered with a very modest reserve, perfect for any collection. Please see my other auctions for other great pieces of folk art & primitives. Payment expected within 5 days of auction's end, item will be shipped UPS ground. Insurance is included in the price listed for shipping. International bidders, please contact me for a shipping quote. This early box is somewhat out-of-round and measures 8" x 8 1/4" on the top & stands 2 3/4" tall when closed.
