This auction is for this extraordinary Friendship quilt, with astronomical social and historical value. The quilt measures roughly 72 x 72 inches and is composed of many very old fabrics from the late 18th to mid 19th centuries. A number of signatures have been added to the quilt, which is dated, 1865, and was probably made as a presentation quilt, possibly in commemoration of a particular battle or the end of the Civil war. Caeser's quote Veni, Vedi, Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) is also supplemented by verses and biblical citations, suggesting the quilt was possibly assembled by a group of church women. This remarkable historical document is in good shape considering its age. We believe it was never used or washed. It does have some staining from storage, especially on the back, but under that the fabrics are crisp and tight and the signatures, which are ink, are largely readable suggesting they had not been washed away. T are some small tears (see photos), none major considering the age of the quilt. Binding is solid. Quilt although imperfect, is for the most part intact and well preserved. The quilt is handquilted at roughly 6-8 spi all over. Overall this is an extraordinary textile and certainly would add value and interest to a museum or other collection.
